Grimsby to host 2011 provincial curling championship

The premier curling event in the province is coming to Grimsby next year.

The Ontario Curling Association announced earlier this month that the Grimsby Curling Club will host the 2011 Ontario Tankard - the Ontario Men’s Curling Championship. The event will take place February 7-13 at the Grimsby Peach King Centre.

“We’re thrilled to have this event come to Grimsby and Niagara Region,” said Dwayne Pyper, who will head up the host committee. “It’s the premier event on the Ontario curling calendar for sure.”

That, said Pyper, will be evident by the participants. Three-time world champion and 2010 Tankard champion Glenn Howard and his team are guaranteed to be in the field at the 2011 provincial championship in Grimsby.

“This is a huge bonus for our event and for the fans that will have the opportunity to see not only some of the best curling in the country, but a world-class team as well,” said Pyper. “In Napanee you could see the impact of having Team Howard on the ice. The crowds were bigger and the seats closest to his games were always in high demand.”

The Howard team will be one of 11 participating in the event. Zone and regional play, plus two last chance challenge rounds will help fill out the remaining 10 spots.

“Hopefully we can have a local team break through and get to the event as well,” said Pyper, who did so with Todd Brandwood and Drew Macklin as a member of the victorious Peter Corner rink in 2000, that went on to compile an impressive record of eight wins and four losses at the Brier in Saskatoon that year, losing out to former world champion Jeff Stoughton of Manitoba.

The curling action, said Pyper, will begin Monday, Feb. 7 and continue during afternoons and evenings until Friday, Feb. 11. Playoffs take place over the weekend, culminating in the provincial championship game in the afternoon of Sunday, Feb. 13. The Peach King Centre boasts 526 seats, but the committee plans to augment that with construction of premium “home and away” end zone seating for sponsors and fans alike. The rink itself will be turned into five sheets of ice, so five matches can happen at a time.

The event, said Pyper, should be a draw for curling fans from all over the province – providing an economic boost to Niagara.

“There should be crowds of between 500 and 1,000 spectators per draw depending on who is competing,” said Pyper. “Overall quite a number will be from outside of the town and outside the region, meaning spinoff to businesses in town, from accommodations like hotels, to restaurants and more.”

Tickets, said Pyper, will range in price from about $125 a week to $150 for the premier seats. Individual game tickets will be in the range of $10-15 per person. Tickets should be available to purchase before the end of the curling season, he said. A website should be up and running within the next few weeks with more information about the event, and tickets.

There is much work to be done in the 12 months leading up to the event, said Pyper, and the community will be engaged to help play a role in bringing the event to fruition. Already, he said, one local business stepped up to the plate when Wills Chev Olds of Grimsby donated use of a cube van to allow organizers to visit the 2010 Tankard to pick up materials that will be needed for next year. The Town of Grimsby has offered to provide storage and the Grimsby Curling Club membership are providing the manpower to stock the materials away for the year.

“I know with this kind of community support we are going to put on one of the best championships ever,” said Pyper.

The event will require about 200 volunteers and the Grimsby Curling Club membership will be heavily involved, but additional support from the community will be sought. Volunteers from all sorts of backgrounds, and with all types of expertise will be encouraged to lend their support. The first member’s information session will be held Sunday, Feb. 21, at 3 p.m. in the club lounge of the Grimsby Curling Club, 277 Kerman Ave. in Grimsby. The core executive, said Pyper, will drive most of the work for the next year, but the skills and contacts of members and volunteers will also play a key role.

“We need people with everything from manning the lounge to helping with security to ticket sales, and more. “I hope the membership packs the room to show support of the event and learn more about how they can get involved.”

Pyper says he hopes the town will embrace the opportunity to showcase itself and be involved in a major sporting event.

“It has been a long time since a provincial championship has been held in the area and it’s a tremendous honour for us to get it and bring it to our community,” Pyper said.
